Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana - PMGAY

PRADHAN MANTRI GRAMIN AWAAS YOJANA : Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana (PMGAY) was previously known as Indira Awaas Yojana. It is a social welfare flagship programme, created to provide housing for the rural poor in India. Indira Awaas Yojana was launched in 1985 by Rajiv Gandhi, as one of the major flagship programmes of the Ministry of Rural Development to construct houses for BPL population in the villages. Under the scheme, financial assistance worth Rs. 70,000 in plain areas, and Rs. 75,000 in difficult areas is provided for construction of houses. The houses are allotted in the name of the woman or jointly between husband and wife.

Purpose: The broad purpose of the scheme is to provide financial assistance to some of the weakest sections of the Society for them to upgrade or construct a house of respectable quality for their personal living.

Targets: Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana targets for 2017 have been revised by the central government after the announcement made by PM Narendra Modi. The government has increased the overall number of housing units to be constructed by 1 crore under the PMGAY..

Funding Pattern: Under PMGAY, the cost of unit assistance is to be shared between Central and State Governments in the  respective ratio 60: 40 in plain areas and 90:10 for North Eastern and hilly states.The beneficiary is entitled to 90 days of unskilled labour from MGNREGA.
